Again - I am in need of an opinion to see what others thoughts are regarding - an issue that I have been having with my Father's Oncologist. I can be overly sensative lately and a little judgmental - but just wondering - if anyone else would be "offended" by the lack of care - that I feel we are receiving. Real quick - my Father was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the end of October - he was given a week to live on 11/14. I did NOT put him on hospice because we wanted treatment to continue for the bone cancer a monthly IV - Zometa - that helps decrease bone pain - and slow down the spread to other bones. He has prostate cancer which metasized to the lymph's, spine, ribs and lung. He continued his monthly IV infusions. He was due for another in early February. I asked if a friend of mine who is a nurse could give it to him - or if I could hire the hospital's nursing agency to give it to him. This is when he was disoriented for a few days and couldn't even stand up. In very bad shape. I left 3 messages for the Doctor - finally after the 4th one the person who answers the phone said - well you need to try to bring him in the Doctor said. HELLO???? Well fortunately the day of the Doctors appointment - he made it out in his wheel chair where the Doctor "pushed" chemo for a 10% chance of extended maybe 6 months and maybe improving quality of life (the only thing my Father can do for himself is feed himself - I do everything else) - although he isn't in a lot of pain and most of the time has his mind. My Father originally agreed to try chemo when he was at the office - but after coming home and being wiped out for 3 days after the Doctors - he thought going every week is TOO much for him. I agreed - considering the side effects from the chemo and a 10% shot just wasn't worth how sick he may become from the chemo. Anyway when I canceled - I tried to schedule another "bone cancer" IV - they said well let me see if the Doctor wants to continue that - they called back and said - well - he can continue if he wants - but he can't see the Doctor and we are going to stop doing blood work checks (for hemoglobin level) - he has also been receiving procrit - I asked why - they said they would have the Doctor call me - I called again that was 1 1/2 weeks ago and stil no call back.
Finally last week on Good Morning America - they were talking about a "new cancer vaccine" that helps extend life in men with advanced prostate cancer - with the only side effects being that of a cold. You get this injection 3 times and that is it. It is not FDA approved - but I obtained information from Good Morning America - and faxed all the information along with a letter to the Doctor - for review. Again 2 phone calls and no response.
I think that this Oncologist has just written him off - because he is terminal - and does not seem to return ANY of my calls. I don't CALL to ask questions about problems he is having or advice - I don't understand why he will not respond. My Father has been going to him for 7 years now - and really we have had no problems - but no issues that required a response. What are your thoughts on this?
