My FIL was in a rehab facility, one of the consultants asked to become his Primary Care physician. His rehab Dr. got a little disturbed by this, saying "we hire him to consult and he comes in recruiting patients." I just happened to be there when she made this statement. After much discussion, my FIL decided that he would like to give this Dr a chance at being his Primary Care physician since he needed a new one (he is from WA)and this Dr was somewhat familiar with the case. I told him that it was his choice.
Well, he had his first appointment with the new PC Dr earlier this week. When we got to the office, there was a waiting room full of elderly patients, all with either wheelchairs, walkers or canes. There were no empty chairs. I started asking others how long they had waited, how they found this Dr and if the office was always this crowded? Some had been there upto 2 hours, they had met the Dr in the same rehab hospital and the office was always crowded. Because I made a comment about not coming back to the receptionist, my FIL was called in ahead of those who had been waiting. The Dr came out to get me since I knew the answers to some of his questions. I told him point blank that this situation did not seem like a good fit. He got a little irate with me and said "But I was there for him when he was in the hospital." Isn't that what he gets paid to do? Now, my FIL says he wants to give him another chance because the Dr agreed to bring him in as the last appointment before lunch, when it is less crowded. I told my FIL that he would do the same to us when he was no longer the new kid on the block. My FIL said we will walk away from him if that happens.
Two other things bothered me about this visit. The new PC Dr second guessed the rehab Dr's prescription which to me seemed unprofessional. Also, he walked away in the middle of the conversation and went to the next patient. We have an appointment in a few weeks with the rehab Dr. who by the way is the Chief of Staff at the hospital. Should I let her know what happened?
