Reply to "Must be on disability 2 years to get Medicare?!"

Hi Barb

How frustrating! I hate it when those who sincerely need the assistance have to literally be on the verge of destitution before any help is available.

It's not much better here. If you need a disability pension there is a lot of forms and meetings to get through, and you have to prove that the applicant has NO OTHER income whatsoever. When we applied for my mother we had to prove she had no job, she couldn't EVER get another job, and a medical certificate saying the exact same thing. I also had to sign a document confirming I was supporting my mother completely alone and unaided. She then got the pension - and each year we must prove again that she is firstly still alive, and that she still not working, and I am still her sole supporter.

Of couse the government sponsored hospitals are an absolute no go, so if you want proper care you have to pay medical aid premiums that are terribly expensive when you need chronic meds etc - so every way you turn it seems as if you're being punished because you're ill! No one chooses to have a serious injury or long term illness - but the moment you do, you either pay out half your salary to take care of yourself or you have to live below the bread line to get any kind of government assistance. it is a despicable state of affairs.

Sending you hugs!
